The best places for Kaiserschmarrn in Vienna

Author: 1000things

Want to enjoy your visit to Vienna like an emperor? We'll tell you where you can enjoy the finest and fluffiest Kaiserschmarrn in town - no Schmarrn!

The Viennese actually call Schmarrn “nix G'scheits”, i.e. nothing special. Of course, that doesn't apply to Kaiserschmarrn! The fluffy dessert is literally on everyone's lips in Vienna - and we'll tell you where Kaiserschmarrn tastes best. Another tip from us: take your Vienna Welcome Card with you when you're out and about in Vienna. It entitles you to many benefits and even discounts at one or two Kaiserschmarrn hotspots.

Kaiser's: Always close to you

On the go for a Kaiserschmarrn? No problem, because a Kaiser's branch is just around the corner. Whether you're shopping on Mariahilfer Straße, sightseeing in the city center or strolling along the other bank of the Danube, you can enjoy the uniquely fluffy Kaiserschmarrn wherever you are. Incidentally, Kaiserschmarrn is named after Emperor Franz Joseph I, who, according to legend, was particularly fond of the pancake-like dessert. At Kaiser's, it is served both as a dessert and as a main course and comes in so many variations that it can be difficult to decide. But whether it's applesauce, Nutella or apple-cinnamon-vanilla: make sure you take your Vienna Welcome Card with you and save an imperial 20%!

Demel: Tradition to go

A hotspot in Vienna's city center: the k.u.k. Court confectionery Demel. If you stroll between Hofburg Palace and St. Stephen's Cathedral, you can treat yourself to what is probably the most famous Kaiserschmarrn to go in the city. Incidentally, Demel has been around since 1786, making it a real Viennese institution, where you can of course also enjoy classics such as Sachertorte. But we're talking about Kaiserschmarrn: as you queue, you can watch through a shop window as the confectioners bake the delicacy fresh in huge pans. That's right, you'll almost certainly be queuing here. But the good news: it's worth it!

Café Landtmann: the classic

With or without raisins, with stewed plums or apple sauce: at Café Landtmann you have the choice - and particularly beautiful views on top. Just a few minutes' walk from Demel, you can enjoy your Kaiserschmarrn in the Schanigarten with a view of the Burgtheater and City Hall. The Landtmann is also one of Vienna's traditional cafés where you can - and probably will - bump into one or two Viennese celebrities. By the way: Café Museum and Café Mozart are also part of the Landtmann if you want to try the Kaiserschmarrn in a different location. A little tip: show your Vienna Welcome Card and save 10% on coffee, cake and mineral water!

Meierei in the city park: the real Steirereck Kaiserschmarrn

If you walk a little way out of the city center, you can treat yourself to a Kaiserschmarrn at the Meierei in the Stadtpark. The Stadtpark is a beautiful green oasis that should be on your Vienna bucket list anyway. And the Meierei makes it even more special: the restaurant is part of the Steirereck, which makes it into the ranking of the world's 50 best restaurants every year - and rightly so, in our opinion. At Meierei, however, you can eat much more cheaply and still enjoy a delicious meal. The waiters always serve you the Kaiserschmarrn freshly baked and in the classic way with plum roaster. And before that, you can feast on Viennese classics such as a veal stew, the famous goulash or - of course - Wiener schnitzel. Kiss your hand, it tastes delicious, as the Viennese say!

Witwe Bolte: well hidden in the hipster district

In the vibrant 7th district, we have a real insider tip: Witwe Bolte, where you can enjoy a caramelized, tipsy Kaiserschmarrn. The fluffy pastry classic is served here with a shot of alcohol. Surrounded by lively bars, cozy cafés and cool concept stores, here in the middle of Spittelberg you can take a break from hipster life and enjoy classic Viennese cuisine. A tip from us: the quaint and cozy Witwe Bolte is the perfect starting point to start the nightlife afterwards - for example with a drink at Adlerhof, Ulrich, Moby Dick or Wirr. Everything just around the corner!

Leopold: Viennese cuisine in the next hipster district

The Viennese also find “Ur leiwand” at Leopold in the 2nd district, just around the corner from the popular Karmelitermarkt. What makes Leopold so special? Here you are served Viennese delicacies such as minced meat, goulash, Wiener schnitzel and, of course, Kaiserschmarrn in a hip atmosphere - nothing is old-fashioned here. Incidentally, the restaurant is also a cool bar late at night. As we say: after the Kaiserschmarrn is before the night out. And you can do that very well in this area - for example at Franz von Hahn, Monte Ofelios or the New Bar.
