The traditional ones
We start with what is probably the best-known ice cream parlor in Vienna: Eissalon Tichy, founded in 1952. The restaurant on Reumannplatz is a real institution and is particularly famous for its legendary ice cream dumplings. But the refreshing ice cream varieties are also impressive: In addition to the typical classics vanilla, chocolate and co, there are also a few alternate varieties, such as caramel, cinnamon and ashanti or the vegan Hawaiian pineapple, pomegranate or currant.
Another established address is the Mauß ice cream parlor. Since 1969, this eatery in Ottakring has been supplying sweet tooths with imaginative ice cream creations made from natural ingredients. It's best to bring a big appetite with you, as the menu is long: milky or vegan ice cream cups with a variety of sauces including or excluding alcohol, ice cream pancakes, parfaits, ice cream cocktails and mixed drinks - hypoglycemia is impossible!
Tip: Do you live for sweets, but need something warm between two scoops of ice cream? Then Vienna is the place for you, as the Viennese coffee house culture is even a UNESCO Intangible World Heritage Site. Treat yourself to a slice of apple strudel or Sachertorte and get a great discount on your order with the Vienna Welcome Card - for example at the famous Café Mozart.
The Italians
La dolce vita is also served in Vienna, even according to the original Italian recipe: for example at Zanoni & Zanoni in the 1st district. After your tour through the inner city, you can sample a variety of sweet ice cream sundae creations in the cozy Schanigärtchen am Lugeck. The friendly staff and international guests always ensure a good atmosphere.
A good portion of bella italia also awaits you in the hip 7th district: at Gelateria La Romana in Stiftgasse. The ice cream parlor has its roots in Rimini, where La Romana has been established since 1947. In its Vienna branch, you will be spoiled with secret and incredibly good ice cream recipes: the creative flavors are handmade and are produced fresh daily with natural, traditional ingredients. Pumpkin crumble pie, biscotto della nonna with chocolate-cocoa cookies or the wonderfully creamy chocolate ice cream - you really can't go wrong with the selection here!
Can't do without chocolate? Then how about your own personal chocolate workshop at the “BO-YO” Chocolate Museum? There you can create your own chocolate bars and Mozartkugeln - and even save on admission with the Vienna Welcome Card.
The sustainable ones
Want gray poppy seed, Styrian kiwi, kefir plum or pumpkin seed oil ice cream? You can get the perfect mix of fresh milk, regional ingredients and creative flavors at Eis-Greissler. Greisslerei is the name given to small food stores in Vienna that sell particularly high-quality and regional products. The name also says it all at the ice cream parlor: the ice cream is homemade, with milk from their own cows in Krumbach, Lower Austria, seasonal fruit and natural ingredients from quality companies such as SONNENTOR or Zotter. There are also many vegan, sugar-reduced, gluten-free and lactose-free varieties.
If you want to go vegan only, we can only recommend the Veganista ice cream varieties: Only plant-based, fresh and natural ingredients of the best quality are used here. The flavors are freshly prepared every day and are therefore constantly changing - so it's best to stop by often and taste your way through!
You won't find any unnecessary additives or sugar at the Viennese organic ice cream maker Helli & Leo - you can also get over 25 varieties of purely organic ice cream of the highest quality here, and the cups and spoons are biodegradable. The ice cream parlor has even come up with a special treat for animal guests and offers organic ice cream made from yoghurt, oat flakes, bananas and chia seeds for dogs.
Tip: Whether for four-legged or two-legged friends, with the Vienna Welcome Card you get a nice discount on your ice cream order.
For the adventurous
Chocolate and vanilla are almost passé here - how about a combination of Brazilian lime and Philippine coconut or Indian mango mixed with Mexican passion fruit instead? Gelato Carlo in the 8th district combines only high-quality and natural ingredients to create unique ice cream flavors. The charming ice cream parlor in Josefstadt serves some of the best vegan and non-vegan ice cream flavors in Vienna. Bonus for curious noses: From the sales area, a glass wall gives you a direct view of the kitchen's ice cream production.
At Castillo's Eis & Bar, chef Melanie Castillo demonstrates that the possible combinations don't have to stop at the flavors: The cozy ice cream parlor in the Fourth mixes you wonderful ice cream cocktails with ice cream from their own production. The drinks owe their intense and authentic taste not only to the minimum fruit content of 50 percent, but also to Melanie Castillo's many years of experience as owner of the legendary cocktail bar Barflys.
