Romantic alleyways: Servitenviertel
The Servitenviertel, located in Vienna's 9th district, is one of the most charming and historically delightful neighborhoods in Vienna. Named after the Servite Church, which forms the centerpiece, the quarter exudes a very special flair with its cobbled alleyways, delightful cafés and small boutiques. We love strolling past the beautiful old buildings, where there's always a hidden courtyard or a cozy eatery to discover. Excellent eclairs and croissants await you at the French bakery la mercerie, which you should definitely stop by: This is where romantic Paris meets relaxed Viennese charm. Another particularly beautiful place in Vienna is the nearby Liechtensteinpark near the elegant Palais Liechtenstein.
Vienna from above: Jubiläumswarte
Enjoy Vienna from above? We can only recommend it. In the 16th district, you will find the Jubiläumswarte on the Gallitzinberg, on the edge of the Vienna Woods. It offers you an unbeatable and completely free view of the entire city and the surrounding nature. The wind blows around your nose while you let your gaze wander in all directions - ideal for a brief change of perspective. You can combine this view with a relaxed hike, as the Jubiläumswarte is located on the well-signposted city hiking trail 4. Would you prefer to take it easy on your calves? Then you can reach this beautiful place via bus lines 46A or 46B. The Vienna Welcome Card entitles you to discounts on public transport, cabs, city bikes and more.
Swan lake and alpacas: Kurpark Oberlaa
Because the Kurpark Oberlaa is located just outside the city center, even we Viennese often forget how worthwhile a visit it is - although the park is easily accessible via the U1 underground line. The huge recreational area was originally planned and laid out for the Vienna International Garden Show in 1974. The entire park is accordingly in love with detail: you will find various themed gardens, a swan lake, a water lily pond, a flower labyrinth, lots of information boards, children's playgrounds and even a petting zoo with alpacas and spectacled sheep. There are plenty of places to linger and you can also enjoy a picnic here. Or simply pop into the iconic Oberlaa spa confectionery for a delicious punch doughnut and a Melange if you get hungry.
Not just for bookworms: National Library
There are also a few places indoors that are steeped in the charm of the city. These definitely include the many libraries: it is not for nothing that Vienna is known far beyond the city limits for its brilliant National Library, the library in the main university and the Vienna Library in City Hall. After all, they not only house literary treasures, but also impress visitors with their unique architecture. We particularly recommend a visit to the National Library: it is the largest publicly accessible academic library in Austria and opens its doors daily for browsing. With its extensive collections, it covers the broadest spectrum of scientific writings, which are stored here in baroque rooms. The State Hall is particularly impressive with its richly decorated, ornate shelves and sculptures, lavish gold decorations and a detailed ceiling painting. Definitely one of the places in Vienna that always sends us on a journey back in time.
In the countryside: Klee am Hanslteich
On the edge of the 17th district, you will find the Klee am Hanslteich restaurant in the middle of nature. The small pond, on the banks of which the charming restaurant nestles, is a feast for the eyes all year round: whether the hoarfrost is glistening or the trees around it are glowing in lush green. The fine restaurant has a lot to offer in terms of cuisine, from chickpea curry to veal wiener, only the most delicious is served. Our highlight from last summer was definitely the fruity, fresh strawberry tiramisu.
By the way: With the Vienna Welcome Card, you get a 20% discount on the consumption of two people. Fancy a digestive walk after your meal? You can easily walk around the pond and if you feel like a short hike, there is a forest path on the other side that leads around three kilometers through the colorful Schottenwald forest.
To enjoy and linger: Kutschkermarkt
One of the most beautiful places in Vienna is of course the city's various markets, which are full of hustle and bustle. One of our favorites is the Kutschkermarkt in the 18th district: a real gourmet market where seasonal and regional delicacies are sold. Much of it is organically grown and of particularly high quality. You can also buy flowers here and cozy cafés await you all around. At weekends, the offer is extended to include a regional farmers' market selling eggs, cheese and fresh bread. The square was recently renovated and expanded to include a consumer-free zone with new seating. If you want to round off your visit to the market with coffee and cake, you should secure a seat in the charming Café Himmelblau.
