Wiener Linien - Vienna's Public Transportation

The Wiener Linien operate the largest regional transportation network in Austria. It includes around 83 kilometers of subway lines and 880 kilometers of bus routes. The tram network, with an operational length of 171 kilometers, is the sixth largest in the world. During peak times, approximately 1,000 vehicles are in operation simultaneously. Altogether, they can accommodate more than 260,000 passengers at the same time – nearly as many as the population of Austria's second-largest city, Graz.

The infrastructure of Wiener Linien includes not only tracks and tunnels but also 109 subway stations, three bus garages, ten tram depots, three subway operations centers, and the main workshop in Simmering. All subway stations and almost all tram and bus stops are barrier-free. Across the entire network, we operate 288 elevators and 344 escalators.

In addition, we offer a growing number of alternative mobility solutions for the "first and last mile": With our sharing services WienMobil Auto, WienMobil Rad, and our mobility partners, we ensure that the people of Vienna are always and everywhere environmentally friendly on the move.

Over 8,700 employees from around 60 nations ensure that two million passengers reach their destinations quickly and safely every day. Safety, reliability, and sustainability are especially important to us. About half of our employees work in operations as bus drivers, tram drivers, or subway operators. However, there are many other professions at Wiener Linien: In total, you can work in over 100 job profiles with us.

Under the project title U2xU5, Wiener Linien is constructing an extension of the U2 subway line and the new U5 subway line. The expansion will create space for an additional 300 million passengers per year and is the foundation for the further development of public transportation in Vienna. Currently, the U2 section between Karlsplatz and Schottentor is being modernized and prepared for the operation of the new, fully automated U5 subway line.

From autumn 2024, the U2 will once again run as usual between Karlsplatz and Seestadt. With the completion of the first fully automated U5 subway line in 2026, there will be a mixed operation of two subway lines in Vienna for the first time. The U2 and the new U5 will share the section between Karlsplatz and Rathaus.

While the U5 trains will run to Frankhplatz, the U2 trains will take passengers to Seestadt. With the completion of the U2 extension to Matzleinsdorfer Platz in 2028, the U2 will get a new tunnel section from Schottentor towards the south and will then run from the Rathaus transfer station via the new stations Neubaugasse, Pilgramgasse, and Reinprechtsdorfer Straße to the new terminus Matzleinsdorfer Platz. From then on, the section between Karlsplatz and Frankhplatz will be served exclusively by the new, fully automated U5.
