Nightlife in Vienna: the best bars and clubs

Author: 1000things

As beautiful as our city is during the day, you'll get to see the real Viennese charm especially after sunset. We'll tell you which bars and clubs you shouldn't miss out on during your city trip to Vienna.

“Pick up your leg, step in": Austropop icon Falco appreciated Vienna's nightlife so much that he dedicated an entire song catalog to it. We feel inspired and certainly won't be asked twice to sing his praises: Here are our favorite bars and clubs in Vienna - from charming Gürtelbeisl to elegant rooftop bars and the best techno dancefloor in town.

Tip: From club to club, bar to bar or even on the way home, it's best to use Vienna's public transportation system. At weekends, they even run continuously and will reliably accompany you through the party night.

The best part? Your ticket is already included in the Vienna Welcome Card. By the way: according to surveys, Vienna has the second best public transport system in Europe. And you have to use them.

Hit the dance floor: the best clubs

If you want to turn night into day in Vienna, there's no way around these iconic clubs: there's no better place to party like Falco than at U4. The singer was not only a regular here, but even dedicated a line in his song “Ganz Wien” to the iconic club. Techno mice and drum'n'bass fans, on the other hand, meet on the Danube Canal in the Viennese club veterans Grelle Forelle and Flex. The latter is one of the most famous clubs in Europe and also has the best sound system in the city. Want party hits to sing along to? Then the O-Klub is the place for you. Fine house and R'n'B sounds can be found in the Babenberger Passage and if you're looking for something a little more elegant, the Volksgarten is your place to dance. But don't be fooled: Voga, as the Viennese call it, is an idyllic park in name only.

Vienna's most legendary nightlife district: the Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle is no longer an insider tip. Locals and tourists regularly rub shoulders in the narrow alleyways in the first district. The area around Schwedenplatz is and remains one of the city's most popular nightlife districts, and rightly so. The Kaktusbar and other bars party every day until the early hours of the morning. But be careful: the name Bermuda Triangle doesn't come from just anywhere. Old party legends say that many a student disappears here for several nights and can't remember anything afterwards. Mysterious!

Spritzwein in the Zollergasse

Vienna loves Zollergasse and Zollergasse loves Vienna - at least as much as love itself. It is not without reason that the bars in the trendy Neubau district are affectionately referred to by locals as the Tinderstrich. Liebling, Ganz Wien, Café Europa and St. Art await you (and your date?) with dim lighting, living room flair, spritz wine in every possible flavor and funny, awkward first date conversations at the next table. Honestly, what more could you want?

On the go: pub crawl through Vienna

An excellent choice not only on St. Patrick's Day: Vienna's Irish pubs. Here, rustic, wooden interiors meet a beer and snack selection that is second to none. Although it's tempting to pick the first location, a pub crawl is still worthwhile. A must: The Long Hall, directly behind Vienna City Hall. With pool tables, a large garden and an excellent selection of beers such as Guinness and Kozel on tap, it's a great place to spend time. Molly Darcy's in the first district provides a simple, cozy atmosphere with regular live music and pub quizzes. And The Golden Harp is also a must on our list of the best pubs in Vienna. There are several branches throughout the city, all of which provide you with a chilled atmosphere and their famous house beer.

Live music and pub culture

Looking for real Viennese charm? You'll find a whole truckload of it in the quaint pubs on the Gürtel and in the city center. In places like the Café Monic and the Stehbeisl in the 6th district, but also in the Cafe Kreisky in the 7th district, we always feel a little bit transported back in time. Although the creative, modern vibe of the two districts has left its mark here too, it's still not hard to imagine that cigarette smoke dominated here some time ago. If you fancy live music in addition to the cozy atmosphere, you should stop by the Chelsea or B72 on the Gürtel. Concerts of all kinds take place here regularly and often host artists who can be seen years later in the Wiener Stadthalle.

Drinks with a view: the most beautiful rooftop bars

We prefer to spend balmy summer nights with a cocktail in our hand above the rooftops of Vienna. Do you want to too? Then you shouldn't miss out on a visit to the rooftop bar at the 25hours Hotel. The bar is an absolute fixed star in the Viennese bar scene and not only provides you with cool cocktail creations, but also with really fine beats. Something similar awaits you on the green terrace of Zoku Vienna, but here you can enjoy your drinks with a view of the colorful Wurstelprater. Last but not least, the Cayo Coco bar at The Hoxton Vienna takes you straight to Cuba. From the very first sip of a tropical cocktail, you'll forget all about the urban jungle, despite the fantastic view of St. Stephen's Cathedral.
