Built by Nicolaus Pacassi around 1754, the Orangery at Schönbrunn measures 189 metres by ten metres, making it the largest Baroque orangery in Europe after Versailles. The western section of the Orangery still serves as overwintering quarters for exotic plants. In the summer months – as soon as weather conditions permit – these plants are taken out and distributed around the park at Schönbrunn.
Take a look inside this imposing building and note in particular the original hypocaust heating, which is still in operation and ensures a constant temperature of approximately 10º Celsius in winter.
Let precious exotic plants like pomegranates, olive trees and myrtles beguile your senses in the Orangery Garden while you enjoy a brief survey of the beginnings of European horticulture.
Last admission is 30 minutes before closing time.
