Take a stroll under the shady pergola in the former Privy Garden of the imperial family!
Known as the Crown Prince Garden in German, the Privy Garden was given this name when a suite of rooms was furnished for Crown Prince Rudolf on the ground floor along this side of the palace around 1870. In the summer months the garden hosts precious specimens from the citrus collection of the Vienna Federal Gardens authority.
The elevated section of the Privy Garden (called the Garden above the Cellar) is notable for its Baroque design, with four parterre flower beds in designs edged with gravel. This part of the garden is bounded by a pergola with four wooden trellis pavilions. The original fifth pavilion has been replaced with a modern viewing pavilion from which you can look down on the colourful patterns of the formal beds.
Lying immediately along the east façade of the palace, the Privy Garden is part of the imperial family’s private gardens on the Meidling side of the park.
